10th Annual Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

Purpose
The primary purpose of this conference is to enhance undergraduate training in and knowledge of the European Union and US-European relations.
In addition, the aim of the conference is to allow US students with expertise in different areas to interact with each other as well as with faculty, foster intercampus cooperation, and recognize the excellent work achieved by students. Envisioned as an intercampus undergraduate seminar, the participating campuses simultaneously offer courses on the issues relevant in Europe today, integrating the conference with the student's curriculum to encourage student initiated research and presentations.

Format
Having completed individual projects, students from each participating institution and their faculty mentors will gather for an interactive conference focusing on European issues and student research. Students will present and discuss their research in a panel format, each panel being composed of three or four students. Each presentation will be followed by questions and a discussion moderated by a faculty member. The conference will include a keynote address. At the conclusion of the conference, faculty participants will nominate and select the “best papers” of the conference. Selected papers will be published in a special volume of conference proceedings.

In addition, the EU Center of California and its partner institutions, the EU Center of Excellence at Seattle at the University of Washington and the EU Center of Excellence at Berkeley at University of California Berkeley, will be offering awards for top papers with study tours to Europe over the summer.

Topics
Students may pursue a wide range of topics that reflect their interest, expertise, and past research. Topics may deal with any aspect of European integration or transatlantic relations.
Topics may deal with but are not limited to:

Defining sovereignty and the role of the state in the EU
Role of the EU in the globalized world
Immigration and social policy
Minority issues
Future of NATO
Transatlantic relations
Enlargement
Institutional reform
Nationalism and politics of the right
Terrorism
Environmental policy
Monetary integration
Science and technology
Future of Euro-American influence and legitimacy in a globalizing world
Reality of emerging new powers such as China and India.

Conference Fees and Travel Expenses
There are no conference fees for non-UC and non-Claremont Colleges students and campuses. The Center will cover hotel room + tax for 2 nights and conference meals for accepted participants. Participants are responsible for travel. Please contact the European Union Center for more details.

Submission guidelines
Papers are required to speak to an element of the European Union, but there are no specific restrictions on subject. Papers should be approximately 10-15 pages double-spaced. If students are submitting longer thesis work, please contact Zaynah Rahman at the EU Center (zrahman@scrippscollege.edu). Presentations should be limited to 10 minutes maximum. 2012 Faculty Research Award

Applications for EU Center of Excellence faculty research awards are now being accepted from UW faculty for research in spring or summer of 2012. Applications should be submitted by *February 27, 2012* for full consideration.

The European Union Center of Excellence at the University of Washington supports the academic study of the EU by providing research grants to UW faculty working on topics related to European integration. This year the center will provide one faculty grant up to a maximum of $3,000 to conduct EU-related research in Europe in the spring or summer of 2012. Applications are welcome from UW faculty in at all disciplines as long as the research proposal focuses on issues related to the European Union. Funding for faculty research grants is made possible by the new EU Center of Excellence grant from the European Commission.

Applicants for the EU Center of Excellence faculty research award should submit a brief (2-4 page) research proposal, CV and a budget.

2012 Graduate Research Awards

The European Union Center of Excellence at the University of Washington fosters the development of new academic talent by providing research grants to UW graduate students working on EU topics. This year the center will provide up to two UW graduate students travel and research grants of a maximum of $3,000 to conduct EU-related research in Europe in the spring and summer of 2012. Applications are welcome from UW graduate students in at all levels of research, as long as the research proposal focuses on issues related to the European Union. Funding for the graduate research grants is made possible by the EU Center of Excellence grant from the European Commission.

Applicants for EU Center of Excellence graduate research grants should send a brief (3-5 page) research proposal, a budget, a curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation from faculty. Applications must be received at the center by no later than February 27, 2012 in order to receive full consideration.

Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar award provides three individuals the opportunity to work as visiting researchers with the University of New Mexico's Latin American library collections, one of the largest and most complete Latin American collections in the country. The award honors Dr. Richard E. Greenleaf, distinguished scholar of colonial Latin American history, and his extensive career in teaching, research, and service.

Invited to apply are scholars (U.S. and international), junior faculty (U.S.) and graduate students (U.S.) who specialize in Latin America.

Doris Sommer - Ripple Effects: The Work of Art in the World

When Antanas Mockus was elected Mayor of Bogota, Colombia, in 1995, it was one of the most dangerous cities in the hemisphere. As mayor he did something unexpected to address urban crime and financial instability: he turned toward the arts and humanities. The effects of his creative thinking would reduce homicides by 70%, traffic accidents by more than half, and triple tax revenues for municipal public works.

Taking Bogota as an example, Doris Sommer discusses how community-based educators, activists, artists, and intellectuals are combining politics and pedagogy in civic cultural experiments to engage publics in acts of community building and in democratic social change.

Sommer is Ira Jewell Williams Professor of Romance Languages & Literatures and Professor of African & African American Studies at Harvard University. She also serves as Director of Cultural Agents, an organization at Harvard committed to promoting the arts and humanities, creativity and scholarship, as social resources for the development of communities worldwide. She is the author of Bilingual Aesthetics: A New Sentimental Education (2004), Proceed with Caution, When Engaged by Minority Writing in the Americas (1999), and is completing Ripple Effects: The Work of Art in the World.

Ripple Effects is part of the Katz Distinguished Lectures in the Humanities series at UW.

The University of Washington’s Department of American Ethnic Studies, the Division of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Mexican Consulate in Seattle cordially invite you to a series of events celebrating the Third Annual Semana de Mexico en Seattle, 2011.

This year’s theme is the railroad. The massive development of a railway network at the end of the 19th century was instrumental for the social and economic emergence of Mexico as a modern nation. When the Mexican Revolution erupted two decades later, the trains became instrumental for the movement end deployment of troops, horses, canons and other weapons. Most significantly, trains have been the vehicle of choice for the movement of millions of migrants between Mexico and the United States, back and forth. But they were not only passengers. The role that Mexican workers played, along with a diversity of immigrants from other nations, in the construction of the U.S. railways is a matter of historical record. More recently, the train has emerged as a synonym for tragedy as masses of Central-American men, children, and women ride it north, in quest of the American dream. Thus, Mexican railways have unwittingly become the bridge that connects the U.S. with Central America. These are some of the subjects that we seek to explore with the exhibition, the films, and the lectures that make up the Semana de Mexico en Seattle, 2011.

Founded in 1989 by Colette Michael as the Bulletin de la Société Américaine de Philosophie de Langue Française and published as Journal of French Philosophy, the journal is now published under the auspices of University of Pittsburgh in electronic and print format. The Journal of French and Francophone Philosophy maintains a strong connection to The Société Américaine de Philosophie de Langue Française (SAPLF). The Société is a member of the Association des Sociétés de Philosophie de Langue Française (ASPLF), created in 1937 by Léon Brunschvicg, Émile Bréhier, and André Lalande.

It is an electronic, open access, peer-reviewed academic journal devoted to the study of French and Francophone thought. JFFP, though rooted in the discipline of philosophy, also invites interdisciplinary extensions and explorations inspired by philosophical thought.

Fifteen boxes filled with archive material arrived on Tuesday at the department of culture of the Basque regional government, in Vitoria. The delivery was historically significant, because the boxes contained documents that were seized from the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) under Franco's dictatorship. Until Tuesday morning, those papers had been sitting inside the Documentary Center for Historical Memory, a state-run archive located in Salamanca.

Google has formed partnerships with many of the great libraries of Europe, including the Czech National Library, the National Library of the Netherlands, the Austrian National Library, the National Libraries of Florence and Rome, the Municipal Library of Lyon, Ghent University, the Bavarian State Library, the National Library of Catalonia, the University Complutense of Madrid, the University Library of Lausanne and the Oxford University Library.

To date, Google has scanned about 150,000 books worldwide from the 16th and 17th centuries, and another 450,000 from the 18th century.

Poet Paolo Valesio: On Mysticism and Modern Italian Poetry

Valesio, the Walker Ames Endowed Lecturer, proposes the grounding of poetry and mysticism in historical context to break from their abstract natures: for poetry, the context of modern Italy; and for mysticism, that of Judeo-Christian tradition.

Council for European Studies Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowships
The Council for European Studies (CES) invites eligible graduate students to apply for its 2011 Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowships.

Designed for students in the early stages of the dissertation process, each fellowship includes a stipend of $4,000, travel support for attending the CES International Conference of Europeanists, and the opportunity to publish in Perspectives on Europe, a semi-annual publication of the Council for European Studies.

More specifically, the Council seeks applicants for the following:
1) Twenty (20) Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowships for graduate students working on general topics in European Studies. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

2) One (1) Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowship for a graduate student working on a topic within the field of Portuguese Studies and whose research requires travel to Portugal for all or a portion of the research term. Funded by the Luso-American Development Foundation.

3) One (1) Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowship for a graduate student working within the discipline of Anthropology on a topic in European Studies. Funded by the Society for the Anthropology of Europe.

International Human Rights Day Celebration

THIS WEEK: Join the University of Washington’s “Write-a-Thon” Campaign !!

As part of the International Human Rights Day Celebration taking place at the UW on December 10th, the UW is WRITING FOR RIGHTS, (http://www.amnestyusa.org/writeathon/). Letters will be written both to leaders who have the authority to free the prisoners, as well as letters of solidarity written to the prisoners themselves.

The UW “Write-a-Thon” event will culminate at the December 10th International Human Rights Day Celebration to be held on Friday December 10, 2010 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in University of Washington Seattle, William Gates Hall, Room 115. In addition to a full program highlighting human rights and student engagement, attendees will have the opportunity to write letters and to learn more about the individual cases. Those who write letters will be entered in a drawing to win a $50 gift certificate from the UW Bookstore OR a one pound bag of Starbucks coffee.

The UW has set a goal of 2010 letters, and has also challenged Evergreen State College, UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC Riverside (who are also participating in the “Write-a-Thon”) to see who can write the most letters. WE ARE HALF WAY THERE WITH 1,000 LETTERS - Let’s make UW #1 in terms of the most letters written!

In this two-hour discussion session, Joe Milutis will give a general introduction to Gilles Deleuze’s major books Cinema One and Cinema Two (English translation), with particular emphasis on Deleuze’s philosophy of the virtual, and its relation to the work of Henri Bergson.

Suitcase: Artists from around the world at Jacob Lawrence Gallery

Suitcase exhibit: Featuring 100 artists -- 10 artists from 10 different countries around the world -- Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Poland, and the United States.

There will be an opening reception for the exhibit from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7. The Jacob Lawrence Gallery is located in the north corner of the Art Building on the first floor. Daniele Di Lodovico holds a degree in Medieval Art from the University of Perugia and an MA in Italian Studies from the University of Washington. He is currently a PhD student in Art History.

Building on the results of the Landscape Study of Public Access to Information and Communications Technology in 25 countries, Ricardo Gomez (Assistant Professor, iSchool) and Fernando Baron (PhD student, iSchool) did an in-depth study in a single country, Colombia. Using a refined research methodology, we validate trends from the Landscape study (ie, types of users and main uses of public access computing, role of infomediaries, and issues of trust, fees, and education. We also explore new topics: ICT and violence, relation with mobile phones and community radio, and users perceptions of impact. We will present a quick overview of the study, discuss highlights of emerging findings, and explore potential linkages with other TASCHA projects.

Step into Allen Library South's ground floor and you'll see a colorful room with furniture not typical in a library. That would be the brand new Research Commons, which officially debuts Nov. 9, although it's already been in use by eager students who asked for what it offers.

With the growth of data-driven research and the need for collaboration, a new kind of space was needed, said Research Commons Librarian Lauren Ray. The commons is designed to provide technology and furniture that encourage people to gather and consult with each other about their research projects...(more).

Granta released its first-ever Best of Young Spanish-Language Novelists issue. It will be published first in Spanish as Los mejores narradores jovenes en español (published by Duomo Ediciones) and the English edition will follow, coming out on 25 November. The twenty-two writers on the list have been chosen by a distinguished panel of six judges: Valerie Miles and Aurelio Major, editors of Granta en español; Guatemalan-American novelist Francisco Goldman; Catalan critic, editor and author Mercedes Monmany; British journalist and ex-Latin American correspondent Isabel Hilton; and Argentinian writer and film-maker Edgardo Cozarinsky. Boren Awards provide a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are excluded.

The Boren Fellowship allows graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate studies. Boren Fellows can be awarded up to $30,000.

The Boren Scholarship provides undergraduate students up to $20,000 for an academic year abroad. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili.

Jordana Mendelson (Spanish, NYU) is an art historican who works on graphic representation of the war. She has curated numerous exhibits in Spain and the US, most recently at the International Center for Photography in New York. The French fought the Thirty Years War on fronts that were both geographical and conceptual, that is on the battlefield and in the media. Since the war activities touched nearly everyone in the country in some manner, it is not surprising that the military and political conflict was actively treated in print. A series of print images produced between 1636 and 1659 caricatured the enemy, hapless Spanish soldiers, and stereotyped the victims, bewildered Flemish peasants and violated women, turning from caricatures of nation to more allegorical depictions as the war wound to a close. How these feuilles volantes or “flying sheets” engaged the public with their images of shame and sexuality, while perhaps also offering a space for a discourse of contestation, will be the subject of this talk about print in a time of war.

Language Use in the United States

American Community Survey Reports: 2007 (Issued: April 2010)

This report provides information on the number and characteristics of people in the United States in 2007 who spoke a language other than English at home. While the vast majority of the population 5 years old and over in the United States spoke only English at home (80 percent), the population speaking a language other than English at home has increased steadily for the last three decades

Of the 55.4 million people who spoke a language other than English at home, 62 percent spoke Spanish (34.5 million speakers), 19 percent spoke an Other Indo-European language (10.3 million speakers), 15 percent
spoke an Asian and Pacifi c Island language (8.3 million speakers), and 4 percent spoke an other language (2.3 million speakers).

Here's the breakdown for the Romance languages:

Spanish or Spanish Creole . . . . . . . . . . .34,547,077 total speakers, which is 62.3% of speakers who spoke a language other than English at home
French . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,355,805, 2.5%

The largest numeric increase was for Spanish speakers (23.4 million more in 2007 than in 1980). Vietnamese speakers had the largest percentage increase (511 percent). Eight languages more than doubled during the period, including four that had fewer than 200,000 speakers in 1980: Russian, Persian, Armenian, and Vietnamese. Some languages declined since 1980. Italian, the second-most frequently spoken non-English language in 1980 (after Spanish), had a net decline of about 800,000 speakers (50 percent decline). It is now the ninth-ranked language on the list of languages other than English spoken at home. Other languages, such as Polish, Yiddish, and Greek, also had large proportionate decreases. While increased immigration led to gains for some language groups, other groups experienced aging populations and dwindling migrant flows into the United States.

Roughly a decade after Franco's dictatorship of Spain ended with his death in 1975, Spaniards began to produce novels and films on the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Among these relatively early cinematic efforts was Carlos Saura's !Ay, Carmela! (1990). As Saura himself put it, "This is the film I always wanted to make."

!Ay Carmela! tells the story of Paulino and Carmela, who are husband and wife troubadours touring the countryside during the Spanish Civil War. They are Republicans, loyal to the new democratically elected government, and with their mute assistant, Gustavete, they journey by mistake into Nationalist territory, controlled by the armies of the fascist General Francisco Franco. They are arrested, fear a firing squad, and receive a reprieve from an Italian Fascist commander who loves the theatre. He arranges a performance for his troops, bargaining with Paulino to stage a burlesque of the Republic in exchange for the actors' freedom. Will the fiery and patriotic Carmela consent? To find out, please join us for this screening in the year-long film and lecture series, “Lives, History, Memory: The Spanish Civil War, 70 Years After.” The series is sponsored by the Department of History, the Division of Spanish and Portuguese, and other units on camps.

I'm hunting down a quotation for a patron. He wants the original French. It's attributed to Balzac.

The world belongs to me because I understand it.

I can't find the source. I'm thinking...we're a little off with our translation, or... Balzac didn't say it. Or...both.

I hereby pledge a cup of coffee to anyone who finds it.

As I was perusing quotation dictionaries in the Reference section, I discovered this gem:

What Great Men Have Said about Great Men*, A Dictionary of Quotations, published in 1902. (When I read that title, I hear this man's voice.)

Apparently, no great men said anything about Balzac in 1902, but here's what three great men had to say about another great man, Dante Alighieri:

"Dante never stays too long." -- Macaulay, Essays : Lord Bacon
"Such wine as Dante poured." -- J. R. Lowell, The Cathedral
"God created Dante and Italian literature together." --Mazzini, Life and Writings, Vol. II

*There actually are some quotes by great men about great women in there.

Thanks to Hot Tippers Lauren and James, we have possibilities:

"attributed to Balzac by people who were close to him - his sister, for example in a short biography she wrote after his death. He never actually wrote it. They say it sounds like Rastignac at the end of Le Pere Goriot, but he never actually says these exact words."

There's also a similar sentiment in Louis' letter to Pauline (Louis Lambert, 1832).

Hot tipper Lauren helped me find the following:

J'enveloppe alors le monde par ma pensée, je le pétris, je le façonne, je le pénètre, je le comprends ou crois le comprendre; mais soudain, je me réveille seul, et me trouve dans une nuit profonde, tout chétif; j'oublie les lueurs que j'oublie les lueurs que je viens d'entrevoir, je suis privée de secours et surtout sans un cœur où je puisse me réfugier!

This has all the keywords (monde = world; comprendre = understand) that could translate into our English translation.

Here's translator Katharine Prescott Wormeley's English version:

At such times I grasp the universe of thought, I knead it, I mould it, I pierce it, I comprehend, or think I comprehend, it. Then suddenly I wake, I am in darkness, puny and pitiable ; I forget the gleams that I have seen ; no succor comes to me ; above all, no heart in which I might take refuge.

My conclusion is that Balzac never wrote: The world belongs to me because I understand it.

Let us now take a moment to praise Google Books. We can search inside text, people. No it's not perfect, but it has made my work-life so much easier. [UW people...we subscribe to ARTFL, which also helps here. I searched within Père Goriot for "monde" to verify that the quote really isn't in there.]

(Let us also take a moment to compare the above quotations and reflect upon the question of translation. I'm of the opinion that if you're reading a work in translation, you're reading a different work. Not that a translation isn't worth reading -- we can't learn every language, and there are very good translators -- but to truly read an author's words, you have to read them in the original language.)

On February 23, at 6:00 pm, Baltasar Garzón, the esteemed Spanish judge and human rights advocate, will deliver a major public lecture on “Human Rights and Historical Memory.” His lecture, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 6 PM in room 138, UW Law School, with a reception to follow.

Garzón rose to prominence as an international figure with his indictment of leaders of the former Chilean military junta, including dictator Augusto Pinochet, on charges of genocide, terrorism and torture during the 1973-1990 dictatorship. Garzón has also played a key role in indicting suspected Basque terrorists. Most recently he has been in the spotlight for bringing charges against the Franco regime for crimes against humanity, and ordered the exhumation of mass graves from Spain's bloody civil war (1936-39).

Garzon’s lecture is one in a year-long linked film and lecture series, Lives, History, Memory: The Spanish Civil War Seventy Years After" that is sponsored by the Department of History's Hanauer Outreach Fund, the School of Law, the Cervantes Institute, the Honorary Consulate of Spain, the Division of Spanish and Portuguese, the Simpson Center for the Humanities, Comparative History of Ideas, the Harry Bridges Labor Studies Center, Global Studies, the School of Drama, and the School of Art.

UW Libraries joins Flickr Commons

Theme of inaugural collection: “Winter Sports”

University Libraries Special Collections and Digital Initiatives announce the launch of a partnership with Flickr online image resource and management service, beginning February 10th with a collection of images from the Libraries on the theme of “Winter Sports in the Northwest.”

Additions from the Libraries collections to the flickr commons pool are planned for the second Wednesday of each month.

The UW Libraries is only the second university library to contribute images -- the first one was Oregon State. Participating institutions include New York Public Library, Smithsonian Institution, U.S. National Archives, Swedish National Heritage Board, Bibliothèque de Toulouse. See other participating institutions.

The program has two main objectives, to increase access to publicly-held photography collections, and to provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge.

Under "The Commons," cultural institutions that have reasonably concluded that a photograph is free of copyright restrictions are invited to share such photograph under their new usage guideline called "no known copyright restrictions."

Flickr Commons was launched on January 16, 2008, when Flickr released their pilot project in partnership with The Library of Congress.

Libraries and Museums in Haiti

From the Heritage Preservation Emergency National Task Force:

We are now beginning to see more substantial reports about damage to cultural heritage in Haiti following the devastating January 12th earthquake. The following Web sites contain current status reports and information on nascent assistance efforts:

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has posted reports on the damage to Haiti’s libraries.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) recently released a statement on the status of the country’s museums.

The International Committee of the Blue Shield has launched an online registration form for volunteer archivists, restorers, curators, librarians, architects, and other experts. This registration will help ICBS link official missions to Haiti with appropriate experts.

Libraries Without Borders is requesting financial donations and books in French for Haitian university libraries.

An assessment team, sponsored by the National Library of the Dominican Republic and other archives and library organizations in the Caribbean, is now in Haiti. A report of their findings should be available sometime next week.

Humanitarian relief continues to be the priority in Haiti, and official recovery efforts from the U.S. are being coordinated through the United States Agency for International Development.

It's one of the rare occasions that I work directly with books (this is the paradox of librarianship), and I often get a kick out of the book covers. This is this week's favorite.

Foster Undergrads take 3rd Place at BYU Spanish Language Business Case Competition

A team of three Foster undergraduates placed third in the second annual Spanish Language Business Case Competition at Brigham Young University in Utah on November 13.

Britten Ferguson, Alex Fitch and Taylor Sloane recommended strategies for Walmart’s international expansion. The case, the presentation and the Q&A were all in Spanish, which is a second language for these students.

The students presented before panels of corporate and faculty judges in two preliminary rounds. The top three teams, representing Indiana University, Utah State University and the UW, were selected to go to the final round.

The students exhibited both their business knowledge and mastery of a second language. Alex Fitch, CISB President, said, “In using my Spanish language skills in this competition, I gained confidence in the prospect of doing business in Spanish in the future."

Thanks to Frances Maloy and Spanish instructor Leon Bensadon for helping with team selection.

Website uses cutting-edge technology to place author's barely legible manuscripts next to scrupulous modern-day transcripts

A new website launched by the Stendhal University of Grenoble and the city's public library aims to give the novelist a new lease of life by putting his often barely legible manuscripts online next to scrupulous new transcripts and annotations by literary scholars.

So far around 500 pages of Stendhal's lesser-known works are available for viewing at manuscrits-de-stendhal.org, with extracts from the author's reflections on travel, literature and philosophy as well as his personal correspondence forming the basis of the fledgling database.

PDF copies of UW dissertations from 1997-2008; are now available to current students, staff, and faculty through ResearchWorks. In addition to the 1997-2008 collection, there is sporadic coverage of dissertations prior to 1997; these are copies of dissertations made by ProQuest when someone purchased a copy of a dissertation. The Libraries is also negotiating for copies of 2009 dissertations. At this time, our collection does not include master's theses.

There are currently 38 Romance Languages & Literatures dissertations in the collection. More on finding UW and non-UW dissertations.
