Public Access ICTs in Colombia: Emergent findings

The last TASCHA Talk of Autumn quarter will take place Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 3:30pm in the RCB multi-purpose room (4th floor of the Roosevelt Commons Building – 4311 11th Ave NE).
Speakers: Ricardo Gomez & Fernando Baron
Building on the results of the Landscape Study of Public Access to Information and Communications Technology in 25 countries, Ricardo Gomez (Assistant Professor, iSchool) and Fernando Baron (PhD student, iSchool) did an in-depth study in a single country, Colombia.  Using a refined research methodology, we validate trends from the Landscape study (ie, types of users and main uses of public access computing, role of infomediaries, and issues of trust, fees, and education.  We also explore new topics: ICT and violence, relation with mobile phones and community radio, and users perceptions of impact.  We will present a quick overview of the study, discuss highlights of emerging findings, and explore potential linkages with other TASCHA projects.
